Consultation
A personalized evaluation, including advanced imaging, to build your custom lengthening plan. Can be done remote or in person.
Surgery
A minimally invasive procedure to insert your PMax lengthening implants, and surgery break the bone, typically requiring a 3-4-night hospital stay.
Lengthening Phase
0-3 months after surgery. Beginning one week after surgery, you lengthen your bones 1mm a day using a handheld remote control. Daily physical therapy and stretching helps grow your soft tissue. Patients must stay in proximity to the Paley Institute throughout this phase.
Consolidation
3-6 months after surgery. Once you reach your lengthening goal, you return home while your new bone fully heals and hardens. As your bone consolidates, you can gradually return to greater activity.
Return to function
6-12 months after surgery. Most patients have recovered 90% of their prior mobility within 9 months. By a year after surgery, we expect most patients to return to their full prior function, including walking, running, and sports activities.
Hardware Removal
12 months+. Patients return for a simple outpatient procedure to remove the implants for good.

What is stature lengthening surgery?
Stature lengthening (often referred to as cosmetic limb lengthening) is a surgical procedure designed to increase an individual’s height by gradually lengthening the bones in the legs. This is achieved through a controlled process where the bone is surgically cut and then slowly separated, allowing new bone tissue to fill in the gap, resulting in increased length.
Who is an ideal candidate for this surgery?
Ideal candidates are individuals who are in good physical and mental health, have realistic expectations, and are non-smokers. It’s essential that candidates do not have chronic diseases or hormonal imbalances that could complicate the procedure or recovery. The surgeons will qualify prospective patients during initial consultation.
How much height can be gained through limb lengthening?
The amount of height that can be safely achieved varies depending on the surgical method and individual patient factors. Generally, lengthening of up to 8 centimeters (approximately 3.15 inches) in the femur (thigh bone) and up to 5 centimeters (approximately 2 inches) in the tibia (shin bone) is considered safe.

How painful is the limb lengthening process?
Pain levels can vary among individuals. While the surgical procedure itself is performed under anesthesia, patients may experience discomfort immediately following surgery as well as during the lengthening phase due to the stretching of muscles and soft tissue. Pain is typically managed with medication and a structured physical therapy program.
