Cosmetic Leg Lengthening
FAQs

Stature lengthening (often referred to as cosmetic limb lengthening) is a surgical procedure designed to increase an individual’s height by gradually lengthening the bones in the legs. This is achieved through a controlled process where the bone is surgically cut and then slowly separated, allowing new bone tissue to fill in the gap, resulting in increased length.

Ideal candidates are individuals who are in good physical and mental health, have realistic expectations, and are non-smokers. It’s essential that candidates do not have chronic diseases or hormonal imbalances that could complicate the procedure or recovery. The surgeons will qualify prospective patients during initial consultation.

For many patients, increasing height significantly improves confidence and reduces height-related distress. While not a cure-all, surgery can have a significant positive impact on self-image and quality of life.

The amount of height that can be safely achieved varies depending on the surgical method and individual patient factors. Generally, lengthening of up to 8 centimeters (approximately 3.15 inches) in the femur (thigh bone) and up to 5 centimeters (approximately 2 inches) in the tibia (shin bone) is considered safe.

Most patients can safely lengthen the femurs up to 8 cm (around 3 inches). Going beyond this increases risks, so each patient case is carefully reviewed to balance safety with patient goals.

The natural ratio between arm length and body height is preserved. Even with 5 to 8 cm of added height, arms remain proportionate, and most patients do not notice imbalance.

Recovery involves a period of bone distraction (lengthening) followed by consolidation (hardening of the new bone). The lengthening phase typically progresses at a rate of 1 millimeter per day, meaning an 8 centimeter lengthening would take about 80 days. Full recovery, including physical therapy and a return to normal activities, can take approximately 6 to 12 months.

Physical therapy is essential and required daily during the lengthening phase. It helps maintain flexibility, mobility, and strength, and is key to achieving the best possible results.

Because we use minimally invasive techniques, scars are usually only a few millimeters in size. Over time, they fade and often become barely noticeable.

Limb lengthening surgery is a safe procedure with a very low risk of complications when choosing experienced surgeons like Dr. Paley and Dr. Robbins and adhering to postoperative care and rehabilitation guidelines. However, as with any surgical procedure, limb lengthening carries potential risks, including fat embolism, pulmonary embolism, premature consolidation, delayed union, non-union, nerve injury, muscle contracture, and issues with bone alignment. Please refer to our Stature Lengthening Guide for more information about potential complications.

Limb lengthening is done by inserting a telescopic device (PRECICE nail) inside the bone. After a short latency period, the bone is gradually lengthened at a controlled rate of about 1mm per day. As space is created, new bone, muscle, and soft tissue regenerate naturally, allowing safe height increase.

Pain levels can vary among individuals. While the surgical procedure itself is performed under anesthesia, patients may experience discomfort immediately following surgery as well as during the lengthening phase due to the stretching of muscles and soft tissue. Pain is typically managed with medication and a structured physical therapy program.

Immediately after surgery and during the lengthening phase, patients will need to rely on assistive devices like walkers or wheelchairs to get around. As the bone heals, weight-bearing activities will be gradually reintroduced based on the surgeon’s evaluation of the patient’s progress.

Once the newly formed bone is fully consolidated, you can gradually return to all the activities you enjoyed before limb lengthening surgery. While you’ll need some time to adjust to the increased length of your legs, the adaptation process is typically quick. Your muscles may initially feel weaker, but regular exercise will help you regain strength and functionality.

Please refer to our Lengthening Options section for more information about our costs for limb lengthening and related procedures.

Costs include surgical fees, up to a 4 night hospital stay, anesthesia, physical therapy, follow-up imaging, and assistive mobility devices (walker, crutches, etc.). Travel and daily living expenses are separate and should be planned in advance. A detailed estimate is provided after initial consultation.

Stature lengthening is not like other cosmetic procedures – it carries risks of chronic pain and disability if not done correctly. That’s why safety should always be the top priority, not cost. While cheaper options exist worldwide, none match the safety standards of the Paley Institute. Our multidisciplinary team – surgeons, anesthesiologists, therapists, and coordinators – works around the clock to ensure every patient receives the highest level of care. Our track record speaks for itself: consistent, reliable results, time after time.

Dr. Paley and Dr. Robbins are the world’s most experienced cosmetic limb lengthening surgeons. The center provides advanced technology, daily physical therapy, onsite medical support, and has achieved proven results with thousands of patients worldwide.

Our priority is maximizing safety while minimizing risks. We use the safest internal devices, monitor patients daily, provide intensive physical therapy, and track healing with regular imaging.
